Community

Collaboration between institutions, associations and informal groups are a mainstay for the cultural life of the city. A series of casual collaborations over the years has led to the creation of a capillary network of alliances that have now come together to form more formal agreements.
The Biblioteca Diffusa project was started in 2014. It is a network of reading venues and small bookshops coordinated by the Municipality to promote and share the wealth of books available at associations, organizations, public and private institutions, to foster the philosophy of active participation in community spaces.
In 2018 Sistema Bibliotecario Giuliano linked 18 specialized libraries, 5 public reading libraries and 4 high-school libraries to form a library network.
Towards the end of 2018, 130 partners signed the Patto di Trieste per la Lettura (The Trieste Pact for Reading), expanding the network to include the production sectors of the book chain and publishing houses, bookstores, theatres, academic institutions, the health agency and professionals in the sector.

Patto di Trieste per la Lettura

Patto di Trieste per la Lettura (The Trieste Pact for Reading) is a tool that oversees policies for the promotion of books and reading. It was set up by the Municipality of Trieste and signed by public institutions and private bodies that believe reading to be a strategic resource to invest in and a social value to promote by means of coordinated and concerted action between different local key players.
The signatories to the Trieste Pact for Reading share the principle that learning is a common good and that reading and books, in their presently available formats, are a vital instrument for access to knowledge. The signatories believe that reading is a strategic resource to invest in and a social value to promote by means of coordinated and concerted action at local level.

Biblioteca Diffusa

Biblioteca Diffusa is a network of reading points and small libraries coordinated by the Municipality of Trieste with the aim of offering a capillary local public reading service.
The project promotes the sharing of books at municipal libraries, associations, organizations and public and private institutions to foster the philosophy of active participation and the exchange of skills in community spaces.

Sistema Bibliotecario Giuliano

The libraries of the ex province of Trieste have come together to form a network called Sistema Bibliotecario Giuliano to improve services and cultural activities offered at local level.
Leading, and pivotal to Sistema Bibliotecario Giuliano, is the “Attilio Hortis” Municipal Library which coordinates service management and joint activities with other libraries. These include the municipal libraries of Sgonico – Zgonik and San Dorligo della Valle – Občine Dolina, the Swiss, Greek and Serbian Orthodox libraries, several local institutes, schools and bodies such as the Istituto Rittmeyer library, the Tartini Music school library, I.R.C.I., and libraries at the following high schools: Oberdan, Petrarca, Carducci Dante, Istituto Volta.
The main objective of Sistema Bibliotecario Giuliano is to create a shared circuit between libraries and librarians so as to progressively increase not only the offer of books but also to exchange proposals and cultural initiatives in keeping with the social and cultural characteristics of the local territory.
